Hastings Symphony Orchestra

It's important to move around during live events but stay out of the way of the audience.
"Shoot and move, shoot and move" is how you do it, plus, you get more interesting views.

Then you can play with the software:

Rennovation

An old building under renovation is a gold mine for a photographer.  Sunset through old, dirty glass makes for rich colors.  Chipped, deteriorating window casings offer interesting textures.  And furniture headed for the dump yield lines and shaped to explore.  Even the work bench, in good light, tells the story.

Minneapolis Street Photography

A photo workshop is only as good as your guide and the one I attended with Valerie Jardine in Minneapolis was great.
She emphasized several points as we discussed "Seeing Photographically:"
  • Be patient.  This wall was built to reflect the Guthrie Theater. I waited for a cyclist to go by to capture the reflection.

  • Don't be afraid to make Street Portraits

  • Lines and Color

  • Capture Moments
  • Minnimalist Composition

  • Unique Angles
  • Layers and reflections

Off the Beaten Track

Attending events news photographers might not cover is a chance to hone your skills in a non-controlled situation.  You can play with aperture and shutter speed and get to know your camera so you're ready for those pressure packed events.
I try to make a single image that tells the story of the event...capturing the action, reaction or emotion of the people involved.
This was a Special Olympics swim meet:
